English Curriculum

English Curriculum Intent

In English, we empower students through a rich and ambitious curriculum that builds deep knowledge of literature, language, and communication. Rooted in the belief that knowledge is empowerment, our curriculum is carefully sequenced to develop confident, literate individuals who are able to think critically, communicate effectively, and engage empathetically with the world around them.

We foster a love of reading and writing, helping students to harness the power of words—both spoken and written—to understand, question, and shape their world. Our curriculum ensures that students encounter a wide range of literary voices, genres, and contexts, enabling them to develop cultural capital, connect with diverse experiences, and become compassionate global citizens.

Through explicit instruction and scaffolded challenge, we support all learners to access, retrieve and apply powerful knowledge. We teach students how to read closely, write purposefully, and speak with confidence and clarity—building the disciplinary expertise unique to English. We believe in nurturing creativity and character by encouraging learners to take intellectual risks, persevere through complexity, and respond thoughtfully to feedback.

Inclusion underpins everything we do: every student is supported to achieve excellence. Our teaching is adaptive, reflective and responsive, ensuring all learners are challenged, encouraged, and celebrated.

Ultimately, we aim to instil in our students a belief that “Life is what I make it”—that with resilience, aspiration and skill, they can use language to shape their future and make meaningful contributions to society.
