History Curriculum
History Curriculum Intent
Knowledge empowers. Our history curriculum equips students with the understanding, analytical skills, and historical awareness needed to engage critically with the past and shape the future. We foster curiosity, resilience, and a passion for learning through an ambitious and inclusive curriculum, encouraging students to challenge perspectives, think independently and recognise the relevance and importance of the past to their own lives.
The aim of the History department is to develop young Historians through:
A knowledge-rich history curriculum, that emphasises explicit teaching of key events, themes, and interpretations to build a strong conceptual foundation.
Upholding rigorous academic standards, by using retrieval practice to support long-term retention of historical knowledge and by encouraging depth of analysis.
Developing disciplinary expertise, teaching students the skills of historical inquiry, including evaluating sources, constructing arguments, and understanding historiography.
Building cultural and historical capital, broadening students' perspectives through a rich curriculum that explores diverse histories and global connections.
Fostering well-rounded historical thinkers, encouraging students to see history beyond the classroom - through debate, discussion, and active engagement with primary sources.
Creating an inclusive learning environment, ensuring all students feel safe, respected, and supported in developing their own interpretations and insights.
Igniting aspiration, inspiring students to use historical knowledge to shape a more informed, just, and thoughtful society.
