Key Stage 4 Options Process

In the spring term of Year 9, all pupils are informed about the choices that they can make for their KS4 courses. Each year, we review the courses that we offer based on the success of the courses in the previous year, evaluation of new courses that are available, their success in other local schools, the popularity of courses and the availability of specialist staff in school to deliver particular courses. This means that although some courses are offered every year, others may not be available to every cohort.

In January, we will provide an outline the courses on offer for the consideration of our current Year 9 students. Depending on the popularity of these courses some may be available to multiple groups of students and others may be oversubscribed if we can not accommodate multiple groups in a specialist area where there is only one subject specialist. Pupils and parents should read this information very carefully, following the advice included to select 4 subjects and reserve subjects.

Here is our timeline for completing the options process:

Wednesday 8th January	The Option process begins with an assembly
friday 10th January	Options Course Information will be made available via the school website.
From Monday 20th January	Students can experience taster lessons in GCSE subjects
From Monday 3rd February	Options meetings with a member of SLT or SCL to discuss preferred choices. Options forms will not be available until after these meetings.
Wednesday 12th February	Y9 Parents Evening - to discuss most recent screening outcomes
Friday 14th February 4pm	Electronic Options forms to be completed. Parents will be emailed a link to the form after Parents' Evening.

KS4 Support Information

In the Autumn Term, following the beginning of KS4 Courses, we meet with parents and pupils to share a more information to support students in the first term of their new courses. This is evening where students received advice about coping with the demands of GCSEs, receive some advice from all 3 Core Subject Curriculum Leaders and have an opportunity to collect some additional information sheets from their options subject teachers.
