Religious Studies Curriculum

Religious Studies Curriculum Intent

In Religious Education, we deliver a knowledge-rich curriculum that provides students with a deep understanding of core beliefs, practices, and ethical frameworks from a range of world religions and non-religious worldviews. This powerful knowledge is explicitly taught and carefully sequenced to build conceptual understanding over time and enable students to engage meaningfully with complex questions about meaning, morality, and human experience.

We ensure rigorous standards by supporting all students to master key disciplinary knowledge and vocabulary. Through regular retrieval practice, debate, and extended writing, students embed core concepts into long-term memory and develop the confidence to express their own views with clarity and respect.

Religious Education develops disciplinary expertise by teaching students how to think theologically, philosophically, and ethically. We foster critical thinking through enquiry-based learning and evaluative writing, encouraging students to consider multiple perspectives, analyse sources of authority, and engage in respectful dialogue.

We are committed to building cultural capital for all by exposing students to the richness and diversity of religious and non-religious worldviews, including voices from contemporary society. Through our wider SAIL curriculum, visits, speakers, and engagement with real-world ethical issues, we provide experiences that deepen students’ understanding of belief in the modern world.

RE plays a key role in developing well-rounded individuals by fostering empathy, tolerance, curiosity, and a secure sense of identity. Students are encouraged to explore their own beliefs and values while showing compassion and respect for others. Through challenging discussions and moral dilemmas, we help students build resilience and learn to navigate uncertainty with confidence.

Our inclusive approach ensures that every student feels safe, valued, and able to contribute. Lessons are designed to be accessible to all, with support and scaffolding that enables every learner to thrive—regardless of background or starting point.

Ultimately, Religious Education helps to ignite aspiration by equipping students with the knowledge, cultural awareness, and moral framework to shape a more just and cohesive world. We aim to inspire students to ask big questions, act with integrity, and aspire to make a positive impact on the their communities.
