In June a selected group of Year 6 pupils from various primary schools in the area were invited to attend The Numeracy Champions Day with the Faculty of Mathematics. The theme of the day was Japan. This was chosen because there are many strands of Mathematics within the Japanese culture. The Shape and Space element of Mathematics was Origami; where one our current Y11 pupils (Sean Holland) demonstrated and assisted pupils in the Japanese art of paper folding. We looked at Number by studying the Japanese currency and compared Exchange Rates. Part of the day was spent by the pupils researching on the internet about Japan and its culture.

The day started when 20 young pupils nervously arrived wondering what the day held in store. The first task was an ice breaker so that pupils and staff could get to know each other. The theme of the day was Japan. This was chosen because there are many strands of Mathematics within the Japanese culture. Activities covered a wide variety of Mathematics as well Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural aspects of the curriculum. The Shape and Space element of Mathematics was Origami; where one our current Y11 pupils (Sean Holland) demonstrated and assisted pupils in the Japanese art of paper folding. We looked at Number by studying the Japanese currency and compared Exchange Rates. Part of the day was spent by the pupils researching on the internet about Japan and its culture. During the afternoon pupils spent time using their Statistical skills by reading tables and plotting various graphs on the Average Temperature in Japan.
